Mother’s Day rang in yesterday to a plethora of Facebook posts, greeting cards, and appropriate adoration of the women who brought us into the world. Life would not exist without mothers, and so wouldn’t a lot of other things like tollhouse cookies and kissing boo-boos.
I acknowledge all women for their mothering traits. Even if you don’t have kids, if you struggle with your children, or (God forbid) if you’ve lost a child, as women we still pour into those around us with our unique ability for nurturing and our keen sense of emotional discernment.
As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you; and you will be comforted over Jerusalem (Isaiah 66:13 NIV).
God describes the comfort with which he bestows on all who fear Him as similar to a mother comforting a child. A compassionate softness resonates within this description. As women, we remain strong for one another to lean on, we extend love to the younger generations, and we proudly stand by our partners through the trials and tribulations of life all the while being the hand that holds, the shoulder that bears, and the arms that carry.
“I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her (Luke 1:38).
The Proverbs 31 woman is a famous biblical example of womanhood and motherhood. Yet, what first springs to my mind when thinking about this subject is the mother of our Lord, Mary. God gave Mary a “big ask” when He called her to be the mother of the Savior of the World. She humbly accepted her role putting God’s plan for her life ahead of her dreams. What a great example to all people to receive His plan and to elevate God’s glory above our own.
Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it (Proverbs 22:6).
One need not be a mother to understand the importance of and participate in the instilling of fundamental Christian principles into the lives of young ones. It is the duty of all women and the entire Body of Christ to pour into children within our mission fields of family, friends, and neighbors. Seeds of potential relationships with Christ can be planted in the youth of our world by anyone. God calls us to be one family in Christ, looking after and caring for the little ones.
So on this Mother’s Day, I’m giving a shout out to all women believers who comfort those around them, who submit to the Lord’s calling, and who teach, train, and love the youth in their lives.
